4K displays on 12 inch tablets?!

Like anyone else who saw the huge 20 inch tablets from Panasonic at IFA this year, I wondered: “isn’t that a little like trying to get a Ford F-350 to appeal to the city commuter?”
The fact of the matter is that the great appeal of the tablet form factor has been, and will continue to be its portability/mobility. While words like 4K and 3D sound good on paper, its not until you can make the form factor portable that this kind of technology gains consumer appeal.
So, I was quite happy when this came across my news-feed:

I know its in Japanese, and if you don’t want to hit that translate button that pops up, I’ll make it easy on you. They have packed 4K resolution (3840 x 2160) into a 12.1 inch display. While 12.1 inches is not the most prevalent screen size right now, it IS much closer to the nirvana that is mobile.

And while only time will tell us how long it before you can get your hands on it, it is a step in the proper direction. And if you are anxious to get a look at the display in person, it will be at FPD International 2013 in Yokohama October 23-25.
